At the Palais, the first inklingof Oscar buzz was born as the reclusiveWoody Allen premiered Midnight inParis. PBS later aired a documentary ofWoody discussing his forty-four filmsshowing the astonishing depth of histalent that made you want to immediatelyhand him the Oscar for Best Picture.Academy rules and Woody forbademarketing this gem.Woody is not a member of theAcademy becase he doesn’t feel that filmsshould be in competition. He told me, “Astatue does not change your life. You stillget a cold. You can’t get a date. You stillhave everyday things to worry about.”The Academy learned to love him froma distance and gave him Best OriginalScreenplay as a consolation.Terrence Malick’s long-awaited,esoteric The Tree of Life was unveiled atCannes and won the coveted Palme D’Or,positioning it for a nomination.The Artist, created by the French, shotin Hollywood and about Hollywood wasthe festival surprise. This charming andoddly original black-and-white silententry was introduced by the ringmasterhimself, Harvey Weinstein. No onecould pronounce or spell director MichelHazanavicius’s name. Jean Dujardincould not speak a word of English andneither could his 10-year-old co-star, theJack Russell Uggie who had been rescuedfrom the pound after two adopters foundhim too wild. Tragically Uggie developedan undisclosed neurological disorderduring production, forcing him to retireat the height of his popularity.No slam dunk Oscar winner emerged inCannes. Steven paid homage tolegends John Ford and David Lean and thecountry fell in love with a horse named Joeyand his 14 stand-ins.Studios worked their stars to the bone.Ironically, Harvey Weinstein’s independentFrench talent who lived in Paris were notas available as their competitors, thereforeUggie became a superstar igniting a pet war.Christopher Plummer, who had BestSupporting Actor in the bag promoted hisJack Russell, Cosmo. Diminutive Scorsesewas seen on TV on a small couch with hislarge Doberman, Blackie, drooling on hissuit.
